Architect Eiffel developed a project in İzmir before the Eiffel Tower, which is visited by more than 10 million people every year, was not built yet. The French company Régie Genérale built the Basmane Station building, designed in a classical style by Eiffel, in 1876. Konak Piérre, which also bears the signature of Eiffel and was used as a customs house in the years it was built, became operational in 1890. Konak Piérre, which served in different areas such as the bus movement manager and the navy facility in the republic period, is today one of the most popular shopping centers in the city with its shopping stores and a movie theater.
